Abortion Recovery Devotional

WHO IS GOD, DO YOU KNOW HIM?

Learn about God and His character and how to know Him more.

How would you describe your relationship with God?

I ask this of nearly all the ladies who contact us. Some of the answers are interesting. One woman mentioned God several times in our call so when I asked her this question she answered with, “I really don’t know how to answer that question.” I was dumbfounded. I began to ask myself how I would answer that question.

It is rather difficult to describe a relationship with someone who doesn’t have flesh. I began to consider how I would describe relationships with certain people in my life. I wanted to know what are the important factors that make up the relationships in my life. Here are a few of those things:

  1. How often we talk and what is the quality of those conversations?

  2. What time investment is made in doing things together?

  3. What is the level of connection (heart) I have for/with that person?

  4. What is my devotion to our relationship look like?

  5. How am I seeking to understand, love, and give back to the people in my life vs get something from them?

  6. How is all this reciprocated back to me?

True meaningful relationships are founded in love for one another. Whether it’s a friendship, marriage, counseling/therapist, sister, brother, etc. Without love we are a clanging gong (1 Cor. 13:1) in the ears of our hearers. We aren’t loving them we are causing them discomfort and pain. Maybe as you inventory your relationships based on the above questions you see in strength of love in a certain relationship over another. It’s never too late to invest and love someone. They will only be grateful.

What about your relationship with God? Do you sit before Him only with a laundry list of wishes, wants, and needs for yourself or others? Or are you waiting on Him to direct your prayers because maybe the answer isn’t what you think (James 4:3, Matthew 6:33). We get disgruntled with God when we put an expectation of healing or release from pressure upon Him. We blame Him when He doesn’t perform how we believe He should. Do we really know Him if this is how we view Him? Is He just a genie in a bottle slumbering until we need Him?

No, He is God. He neither gets tired nor weary. He sees all things past, present, and future. He does His will and for His good pleasure He blesses us abundantly (Philippians 2:13, Ephesians 3:20). Maybe we don’t full grasp what a blessing truly is. Yes, I’m sure we do not! Our prayers should model that of Jesus (God in flesh), “Not my will be done but Your will.”

So, who is God?

He is and was and will be to come. He is eternal. He was at the beginning and will be at the end. Do you know Him? He is Father, Son, Holy Spirit. He is love, light, life, truth, and peace. He is the beginning of wisdom, full of knowledge and understanding. He is our healer, our righteousness, our savior. He calls us friend, beloved, we are His. To know Him is to love Him. To love Him is to desire nothing more than to know Him. To know Him we must empty ourselves of all our wants, wishes, desires, plans, expectations, and dreams to pursue His will alone. Jeremiah records the words of the Lord as this, “But let him who glories glory in this, That he understand and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgement, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.

Do you know Him?

He is just and the judge of all the earth. There is none like Him, no door He opens can be shut and no door He shuts can be open. He is sovereign, the name above all names, the ancient of days, the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

Do you know Him? What is our relationship like with God?

Sit with Him, open His word, ask Him to help you understand it, read it from Genesis to Revelation, and then do it again and again (Deuteronomy 4:29, Psalm 14:2). As you do journal, underline in your Bible, share with a friend or on social media what God is showing you. You will know Him and You will have a sweet relationship with Him. You will learn to discern His voice over all others.

It starts with repentance of sin. Stop going your destructive way and turn to go His way. That’s the beginning of salvation. Jesus died so you could approach the throne of God (the throne of grace). Then walk in the newness of life He so graciously gives you. Stand in confidence because the God of the universe died so you could be free, free to know Him, free from sin, and free to live out the purpose He designed for you before the world began.

You might be asking can someone like me, who has abortion in their past know God? Will He really forgive me? Yes! I have three abortions in my past and I can boast that I know God. He has made Himself known to me. When I sit down each day to spend time with Him, He speaks to me. There are times we just sit in His word together, there are no profound revelations of what I’m reading but His word penetrates my heart and transforms me. One thing I’ve come to know and understand in my years as a Bible believing Christian is this:

He didn’t die because I am good, He died because He is good!

If you sit with Him to really know Him, you will come to same sweet revelation of how our great God would take our place in death and give us His new life. This will settle you, strengthen you, perfect you, and establish you in all you do in this life (1 Peter 5:10).
